We are writing with an urgent mission. For 106 years, the Champlain Society has been committed to making original documentary history available to an international readership, and now it needs your special attention to ensure it continues its good work. Over the past few years, the CS has worked hard to continue to produce critically acclaimed publications, such as the David Thompson's Writings, and a new edition of Champlain's Des Sauvages.

We are delighted that there are extremely interesting activities on the horizon that will further entrench the role of the Champlain Society in scholarship and in teaching about our country.  As you were made aware in the last Pen & Paddle, a new journal entitled First Person/Première Personne will soon be launched. The Champlain Society is also spearheading a partnership with Library and Archives Canada to engage Canadians and scholars in transcribing John A. Macdonald's correspondence through an innovative website. The CS is also working with the University of Toronto Library to improve the searchability of its on-line treasure trove of publications.

Your membership and support is critical to the long term sustainability of the Champlain Society.  Unfortunately it is not enough. Champlain Society activities do not fit government grant programs, and we need your renewed help to maintain the high quality of our publications and activities.

There are a number of ways in which you can enhance your support for the society.

  • We invite you to approach friends, colleagues, and neighbours and encourage them to join the society. You are well aware of the contribution that the Society makes to Canadian and international scholarship and scholars.  The membership form is on this website.
  • We are also invite you to make a donation to the Champlain Society, knowing that your tax deductible gift will go directly to expanding the information available on Canadian history. Donations can be made as one-time, spread out over the year, or included as a disbursement of your estate defined in your will.  Please make a generous donation and become a member of the Order of Good Cheer.
  • You might also want to consider contributing to the Honorary President's Challenge/ Champlain Society Endowment Fund.  This is a new fund, started with a contribution from John Warkentin. Its capital will be invested so as to yield monies each year that would go towards funding the operations of the CS. In this case, you can be assured that the Society will outlast us all. We hope you'll take this challenge and contribute.

The situation is critical for the Society. To remain financially stable, the CS has slashed costs and has improved and increased its services. But we need to do more. Your support will help guarantee the future success and vitality of the Champlain Society.  Thank you for your generosity.

Sincerely,

John Warkentin
Honorary President
