The Writings of David Thompson, edited by William E. Moreau. Three volumes.

This edition of the works of Thompson has been in preparation for the past nine years, and is to be published jointly with McGill-Queen's University Press and the University of Washington Press. The first two volumes present an entirely new transcription of the complete Travels. They meet the highest standards of textual editing and include much material not published in the editions of Tyrrell, Glover, and Hopwood. The third volume contains Thompson's letters, reports, contributions to newspapers, and selected material from his notebooks; very little of this material has seen publication.

Volume 1, published in July 2009, includes an introductory essay, placing Thompson in his historical and intellectual context and describing the central themes and characteristics of his work, a textual introduction, a chronology, the 1850 Travels text, and extensive annotations touching on all the branches of knowledge on which Thompson writes, including the fur trade, natural history, astronomy, and native peoples.

Please check back for updated information on the publishing schedule of the next two volumes.
