Description: In 1884, nearly 400 Canadian "voyageurs" were commanded by a Toronto alderman in an expedition to Egypt to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum. Lord Wolseley had requested such a force, inspired by his experience in command of the Red River expedition of 1870. While the men were non-combatants and it was not a formal military venture, it nevertheless represented an important step towards Canada's participation in the Boer War and First World War.
