Description: A writer and journalist born at Quebec, Begg went west as a businessman in 1867. He was present for the critical transfer of power in the North-West from the Hudson's Bay Company to the Dominion of Canada. He wrote harshly of the behaviour and attitudes of Canadians towards the Métis. His journal was the foundation of opinions he made public in Dot it down (1871), a fictional account of the Red River resistance, and in The creation of Manitoba (1871), a history published under the pseudonym Justitia.
