| Description: | In the spring of 1789, Colnett departed Macao in command of a British trading fleet to establish a settlement at Nootka Sound in the Pacific Northwest. But Spain also claimed the territory, and Colnett's Argonaut and another ship were seized on their arrival at Nootka. The ships were released by Spain on July 9 1790. The Nootka Incident caused a serious diplomatic row, which was resolved when Spain conceded to the British the right to trade and navigate in the region. Long thought lost, the journal was recovered in the Public Record Office in 1935. |
